Robbery
Police
are asking for witnesses following an incident which happened
between 7 and 730am on Wednesday 28/7.
A 75-year-old woman was walking along Convamore Road in Grimsby
when she was approached by a man who asked her for some money.
She told him she didn't have any money but the man insisted she
did and then demanded she give him her handbag.
The man then pushed the woman to her knees, causing her to drop
the black coloured shopping bag she was carrying, at which point
the suspect picked it up and ran off towards Churchill Way leaving
the woman very shaken but otherwise not injured.
The suspect is described as wearing a black coloured waist length
anorak style coat and dark coloured trousers. He was carrying
a white coloured carrier bag at the time.
Any witnesses or anyone with information should contact Humberside
Police on 0845 60 60 222 quoting

Tax
Rebate email Scam
Humberside Police has
received one report from a resident that an email alleging to
be from the HM Revenue & Customs was sent into his inbox.
The email, which claims to be from HM Revenue & Customs Refund
Department, asks the internet user to follow the link where further
information is asked for - including bank details.
Police advise people not to supply their bank details or any personal
information if they receive this email.
Detective Sergeant Neil Clarkson from Humberside Police Economic
Crime Team said: “This recent email purports to be from the HM
Revenue & Customs Refund Department, however on closer inspection,
we are now confident this is a scam.
“A bank and other financial organisations will never ask you to
give security details over an email.
“Although this is an industry wide issue, we are seeing an ever
increasing number of ways to attempt to defraud and defraud members
of the public to gain personal details or banking information.
These can often be in the form of a scam like this and the aim
is to steal money from innocent people.
“My advice is if you are unsure call the organisation who has
sent you the e-mail to check the origin, but do not supply your
bank details or personal details via e-mail links.”
Anyone who has provided any bank details by following this link
and feel they may be a fraud victim must contact their bank as
soon as possible and contact Humberside Police on 0845

Metal Theft
Action
Theft
of metal continues to be a problem across the country and thieves
are taking bigger risks in order to steel enough to make it worth
their while which is presenting police forces with the ongoing
challenge of how to make it harder for thieves to sell the stolen
metal while prices remain high.
On Wednesday 14 July 2010 Police in North East Lincolnshire along
with Trading Standards are taking part in the national metal theft
day of action in order to set the wheels in motion and target
not only those committing this type of crime but also any scrap
metal dealers who may be taking this stolen metal in without asking
the correct questions or recording the correct details at the
time.
Offences have increased significantly over the past six months
across the United Kingdom, with a large number of thefts from
railways, utilities substations, businesses, houses and even road
grids.
The crime can have a significant impact on businesses as well
as communities and can put not only the thieves but also innocent
members of public in immediate danger as we have seen instances
were gas piping has been stolen leaving gas leaking into properties.
The desirability for metal amongst thieves has been fuelled by
increasing price for metal across worldwide markets. The industry
is estimated to be a £5 billion per annum industry, and a conservative
estimate is that metal theft offences costs the UK costs the economy
£700million per annum.
With the prices set to continue rising as more countries come
out of recession, police forces, together with a variety of industries,
are exploring methods of tackling the problem.
In North East Lincolnshire, there are a number of housing re-generation
areas, with many of these areas being targeted in the past by
metal thieves who break-in before stripping the metal from within
before weighing in the stolen contraband at scrap metal dealers
in the area.
Therefore local police officers will be working with Trading Standards
officers in order to target scrap yards with three aims in mind:
1 – To examine the records kept by the scrap metal dealers to
ensure they are not purchasing stolen metal
2 – To educate the scrap metal dealers that Humberside Police
are taking a pro active approach in the investigation of
metal theft offences and remind them of their obligations under
the Scrap Metal Dealers Act 1964
3 - To encourage scrap metal dealers to assist Humberside Police
in asking questions of their customers beyond what the law requires
to assist police with metal theft inquiries in the future.
In addition officers from Humberside Police Vehicle Investigation
Branch and the Roads Policing Unit will be deployed along with
a member of the Environmental Agency (EA) to the areas close to
scrap metal dealers.
They will deal with any offences in relation to the vehicles used
in the transportation of scrap. EA staff will deal with any contravention's
to waste carriers’ licences.
Paul Crowther, Deputy Chief Constable of British Transport Police
and national lead on metal theft for Association of Chief Police
Officers, is overseeing a national day of action which will see
police forces in England, Scotland and Wales targeting thieves
and scrap yards.
A spokesperson for Police in North East Lincolnshire said: "The
theft of metal is far from being a victimless crime often causing
damage to the properties, businesses and even church's it is taken
from not to mention putting those inside at risk should a gas
pipe be the target.
“As we have said before, Police have devoted considerable resources
to driving down this type of crime, through targeted policing
including intelligence-led operations, proactive patrols and scrap
yard visits.
“Officers are continuing to work hard to identify offenders and
take appropriate action; this has resulted in recent arrests in
the North East Lincs area.
Police were called shortly after 830pm yesterday following a reported
incident which happened at Cherry Valley Farms in Great Coates
in which a quantity of stainless steel items were stolen by thieves
who drove away from the scene. Officers attended the area and
following an initial search two men aged 29 and 34-years-old were
arrested shortly after 9pm.

Serious Assault
An
investigation has been launched following a serious assault which
happened between 1020pm and 1035pm on Sunday 11 July 2010 in Grimsby.
A 72-year-old man had just parked his mobility scooter at the
rear of his home address in The Square, Weelsby Street, Grimsby
and was walking back towards his door when he was approached from
behind by two men.
One of the men shouted at the 72-year-old demanding his money
and watch before reaching out and grabbing at the watch while
the other suspect assaulted the victim causing him to fall to
the ground.
Both suspects then assaulted the 72-year-old further while again
trying to grab the victim's wallet and watch before then running
from the scene leaving the victim on the ground having suffered
broken wrists, broken ribs, swelling to his face along with grazing
and lacerations to the rest of his body.
Detective Insp Wendy North who is leading the investigation said:
"An investigation is underway into this despicable offence
against an innocent and vulnerable man.
"The two suspects have shown no remorse during this violent
assault and their motivation seems to have been to steal little
more than the victim's valuable items.
"The incident has happened in a close knit community and
has left the residents understandably shocked by the nature of
the assault and it is vital that anyone with information no matter
how trivial it may seemcomes forward either by contacting Humberside
Police or by contacting Crimestoppers anonymously.
"We would like to reassure the public that this seems to
be an isolated incident and police officers and PCSO's will be
out in the area making inquiries so please do not hesitate to
stop them should you have any concerns."
The first suspect is described as being a white male aged around
27-years-old, approx. 5ft 10in tall and of slim build. He had
short brown coloured hair and was wearing a white coloured hooded
jacket at the time.
The second suspect is described as being a white male aged in
his early 20's, of slim build and approx. 5ft 5in tall. He was
wearing a dark coloured top with jeans and had dark coloured hair.
Anyone with information relating to this incident should contact
either Humberside Police on 0845
60 60 222 quoting log number
800 of 11/07/2010 or alternatively
contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800

Detective
Chief Superintendent Richard Kerman from Humberside Police said:
“The internet is an amazing place where we can connect with each
other and maintain regular communication, but we know that young
users of social networking sites can be vulnerable. Today’s announcement
by CEOP represents a significant step forward in keeping young
people safer on Facebook and we would urge all Facebook users
in Humberside to add this application.
“If you are a parent on Facebook, add the app and encourage your
children to do so too. This will act as a visible deterrent to
offenders and result in your child receiving regular online safety
tips from CEOP, so you can feel reassured that they are better
protected online.”
As well as adding the ClickCEOP app, Humberside Police offer the
following advice to stay safe when using Facebook:
Make sure privacy settings are set to private so the only people
who can see your page and information are your friends
Some people lie about who they are online so only add friends
who you know in the real world
Block or delete people who upset you or send nasty messages

Unlocked
Doors and Windows
Crime analysts at Grimsby and Scunthorpe
continue to tell safelinks that, out of the house burglaries reported
so far this year, about a third, yes 33%, have involved an insecurity.
This means thieves have simply walked in through an unlocked door
or reached in through an insecure window, unhooked the catch and
climbed in.
Thieves roam around the streets walking down drives and trying
back doors.
If challenged they will have a little story to put you off guard
so they can make a getaway.
Thieves take advantage of these insecurities and steal handbags,
wallets or car ignition keys left on the kitchen table.
Please pass the warning about to lock doors and windows at all
times even if you are in the house.
If you see anyone going down drives please call Police straight
away on 0845 60 60 222

Reducing
Crime and Anti Social Behaviour in Your Area.
Safelinks wants to further reduce crime and anti-social behaviour
in this area brought about by the public and police.
There is less crime and bad behaviour in areas where there is
an active neighbourhood watch in place. The reason is that the
police are only as effective as the quality of information given
to the police by the public. In other words grouping together
protects your home and outnumbers criminals.
Graham Reynolds is an experienced neighbourhood watch group development
officer and is there to help you to set up a group to protect
your street. You then gain the strength of The Humberside Association
of Neighbourhood Watch Groups.
Setting up is not difficult and does not involve a great lot of
time to function. As with all these things the success depends
on people interested in making their area much safer. I think
that person is you.
It's about grouping together and caring without interfering. Graham
can help you get the balance right.
There is a clear difference between a general moan and groan about
the state of things and reporting a suspicious incident or the
activities of a criminal. The latter puts criminals in a position
of disadvantage.
For years the best successes by the Police have been the public
calling about a suspicious incident, the Police responding to
the incident and arresting the criminal or stopping the incident.
The Police are getting better so we, the public, need to get better
too.
If you are interested in helping to start a neighbourhood watch
group or want to know if a group exists in your area please call
safelinks via 'contact safelinks' and we will ask Graham to contact
you.

Hard
Sell
Police and Trading Standards in North East Lincolnshire are warning
the public to be cautious if approached by companies trying to
sell products over the telephone.
The warning comes as a local residents alerted Police to an incident
in which a security company contacted her while at home offering
free items such as a property marking pen or paper shredder in
order to try and gain an appointment and visit her at home in
order to try and sell one of their security systems.
This type of approach has been used in our region previously and
has also been featured recently on national television as members
of public inviting such sales people into their homes can find
themselves on the receiving end of a very aggressive sales pitch
featuring some services which are not possible to deliver on and
ultimately the product can prove to be very expensive indeed with
a previous victim finding themselves on the receiving end of a
£4,000 bill.
There are however a few relatively simple steps which can be taken
in order to avoid becoming the victim of a hard sell:
1) You are not obliged to take anything offered as a free gift,
speak to these people should they call or agree an appointment
should they contact you by telephone.
2) If you are interested in buying a service or product, ensure
you get more than one quote from other companies prior to agreeing
a sale in order to avoid being over charged.
3) You can look to set up a 'no cold calling' zone or neighbourhood
watch group which can prevent these people targeting your neighbourhood.
A spokesperson for Humberside Police said: "There are a very
small number of companies out there who are willing to make an
easy sale by targeting vulnerable members of the community in
order to pressure them into buying a product.
"This type of approach can often see a member of public paying
significantly more than they should for a product or service as
they feel obliged due to the sales person having visited the victim
at home in order to make their sales pitch.
"In instances such as this it is important that the public
ensure they get all the facts and prices before agreeing anything
with the company and if possible, seek alternative quotes from
similar companies to ensure you are getting the best price possibly.
"Above all, if you are not happy or are suspicious about
a company making an approach, you are not obliged to speak to
them further so simply putting the phone down could save you a
lot of expense and heartache."
Neil Clark, principal trading standards officer for North East
Lincolnshire Council, said: "Whilst we encourage residents
not to agree to deals made under duress on the doorstep and for
consumers to feel confident in exercising their consumer rights,
if a contract is signed at home for the supply of goods or services
over £35 consumers have the right to a seven-day 'cooling off'
period before work should legally begin. Residents are encouraged
not to sign anything without reading it fully. People often sign
their rights away without knowing it, which makes it impossible
for us to pursue.

Unsolicited
Security Services
Recently, a large number of readers have reported receiving telephone
calls from companies making out they are connected with Government
Schemes to perform security checks with the offer of free or reduced
price burglar alarm systems.
Don't be taken
in.
Safelinks advises that if you where to consider the installation
of a burglar alarm you should engage the services of a local burglar
alarm installer recommended by relatives, friends or neighbours.
In any case before allowing anyone into your home you should check
with the local trading standards department at council offices.
Humberside Police in NE Lincs provide a free home security check
and upgrade by trained fitters. Please phone Jane Taylor on 01472
324988/324987 for appointment for this very useful service. The
Police fitters are experienced in the methods used by burglars
in this area and so will help you to avoid a nasty experience.

People
Who Make Life Miserable
- Anti-Social Behaviour
Question;
What is anti-social behaviour?
Answer;
Anti-social behaviour is a general term used for neighbour and
estate nuisance problems. It can be serious acts of violence and
harassment. It can also be disturbance from loud music. It
includes individuals and groups causing trouble
It can hold back the
improvement of our areas, creating a place where crime can take
hold.
The Government, the
Humberside Police , NE Lincolnshire Council and Shoreline are
committed to cracking down on anti social behaviour.
Andy Everett is the
anti-social behaviour co-ordinator and he works for Humberside
Police alongside Lizzie Smith, the anti-social behaviour co-ordinator
for The North East Lincolnshire Council. They are the focal point
for the reduction of mis-behaviour by the few individuals who
set out to make life unbearable for a number of others.
They
have a team of researchers and investigators gathering evidence,
all working in partnership with the Neighbourhood Police Teams.
A
large number of anti-social behaviour orders have been granted
by Magistrates Court when steps have been taken to improve behaviour
and these steps have failed. There are always applications for
orders being worked upon. The team work to improve behaviour before
and order is applied for.
Safelinks wants to work
with ordinary, properly behaved people, the anti-social behaviour
officer, the Police, NE Lincolnshire Council and anyone similarly
minded to make NE Lincolnshire a better place in which to live,
work and find enjoyment.
The secret to its success
is the strength of the community, to raise standards and the sending
of information in much the same way you give information on crime
and drug dealing.
Steps are
taken to resolve issues before an anti-social behaviour order
is obtained. The community is needed as the community know much
more about an area than the Police or ASBO Team. Once an order
is made the community controls the order by reporting any breaches
to the Police. Armed with evidence the Police arrest the person.
The magistrates court decides on the sentence. This can and does
include imprisonment.
