Police CCTV

A police mobile CCTV van is operating in the Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham areas.

safelinks monitors the work of the unit and will keep you informed.

The van is being used at trouble spots in North East Lincolnshire.

The system is intended to help the police and communities to control crime, bad behaviour and drunks.

You will see the unit at all hours and at places where trouble occurs.

It is making the place much safer by preventing trouble - not just reacting to it.

Please give us a call if you can help with the best use of the van.

The unit are also patrolling in areas where residents have complained about youths gathering and causing trouble.

26/2 Patrols of drinking hotspots in Cleethorpes and Grimsby.  No arrests but 6 persons ejected from licensed premises in Cleethorpes following 3 incidents.

27/2 4 persons arrested for punlic disorder at Cleethorpes Market Place.  Assistance given to a taxi driver having problems with a customer at Kings Road Cleethorpes.  Man ejected from licensed premises at Alexandra Road Cleethorpes.

Patrols where the public have reported disorderly conduct will continue this week in support of the Respect scheme.  The team have been concentrating on improving behaviour at all places where there are reports of youths causing annoyance from residents.

Also

Humberside are making more use of the evidence which can be gathered from personal cameras fitted to Police Officers' uniform. This will assist in the conviction of criminals and those who mis-behave by a clearer presentation of the scene of an incident. Never has the saying, " A photograph is better than a thousand words." safelinks was allowed to view the movies recorded by the officers in the experimental stage and it can be over powering.

The evidence from these cameras is helping to prosecute offenders

Bogus Callers

Humberside Police is asking the local community to be vigilant as there have been reports of bogus callers approaching homes in the Brigg area.

Police have been informed of a group of youths who have been knocking on doors in Brigg claiming to be from the Youth Offending Service in both Middlesbrough and Barnsley.

They have then asked the residents of the property if they would like to purchase items from carrier bags they hold as they are trying to raise money for tools.

Despite them possibly wearing identification cards neither of the YOS teams in Barnsley or Middlesbrough are aware of such a scheme.

Humberside Police has the following advice when dealing with any type of bogus callers :

Lock, Stop, Chain and Check

When someone calls at your door and offers to do repairs to your home or to ask for urgent help, or when someone official knocks on your door, follow these simple steps to help protect yourself and your home from bogus callers .

Lock: Keep your front and back doors locked, even when at home.

Stop: Before you answer, stop and think if you are expecting anyone. Check that you have locked any back doors and taken the key out. Look through the spy hole or the window to see who it is.

Chain: If you decide to open the door, put the door chain or bar on first. Keep the bar or chain on while you are talking to the person on the doorstep. (Normally, when the door is shut and locked, leave the bar or chain off in case you need to get out in an emergency.) Some bogus callers call on older and vulnerable people saying they need help urgently. They may ask you to help them outside the house or ask to come in to make a phone call or have a glass of water. Only go to help them if you have someone else with you. Don't worry if you choose not to help it is not rude or unfriendly.

Check: If someone who looks official calls at your door, always do the following. Ask for and carefully check their identity card, even if they have a prearranged appointment (all genuine callers will carry one). Do they look like the person on the card? Is the name the same one as that on your letter? Close the door while you do this. If you are not expecting them and they have not shown you an identity card, do not let them in until you have checked and double-checked that the caller is genuine.

If in doubt keep 'em out

Genuine callers will always be happy to make an appointment to call and will carry an identity card with a photograph. They won't mind waiting if you want to phone and confirm their identity or want to rearrange the appointment.

Report bogus callers to Police on
0845 60 60 222.

People Who Make Life Miserable - Anti-Social Beaviour

Question; What is anti-social behaviour?

Answer; Anti-social behaviour is a general term used for neighbour and estate nuisance problems. It can be serious acts of violence and harassment. It can also be disturbance from loud music. It includes individuals and groups causing trouble

It can hold back the improvement of our areas, creating a place where crime can take hold.

The Government, the Humberside Police, NE Lincolnshire Council and Shoreline are committed to cracking down on anti social behaviour.

Andy Everett is the anti-social behaviour co-ordinator and he works for Humberside Police alongside Lizzie Smith, the anti-social behaviour co-ordinator for The North East Lincolnshire Council. They are
the focal point for the reduction of mis-behaviour by the few individuals who set out to make life unbearable for a number of others.

They have a team of researchers and investigators gathering evidence, all working in partnership with the Neighbourhood Police Teams.

A large number of anti-social behaviour orders have been granted by Magistrates Court when steps have been taken to improve behaviour and these steps have failed. There are always applications for orders being worked upon. The team work to improve behaviour before and order is applied for.

Safelinks wants to work with ordinary, properly behaved people, the anti-social behaviour officer, the Police, NE Lincolnshire Council and anyone similarly minded to make NE Lincolnshire a better place in which to live, work and find enjoyment.

The secret to its success is the strength of the community, to raise standards and the sending of information in much the same way you give information on crime and drug dealing.

Steps are taken to resolve issues before an anti-social behaviour order is obtained. The community is needed as the community know much more about an area than the Police or ASBO Team. Once an order is made the community controls the order by reporting any breaches to the Police. Armed with evidence the Police arrest the person. The magistrates court decides on the sentence. This can and does include imprisonment.

If you see a breach of an order taking place please call Police on 0845 60 60 222 straight away.

Not all orders are published so please call Safelinks via 'contact safelinks' if you wish to know about other orders.

Unsolicited Security Services

Recently, a large number of readers have reported receiving telephone calls from companies making out they are connected with Government Schemes to perform security checks with the offer of free or reduced price burglar alarm systems.

Safelinks advises that if you where to consider the installation of a burglar alarm you should engage the services of a local burglar alarm installer recommended by relatives, friends or neighbours.  In any case before allowing anyone into your home you should check with the local trading standards department at council offices.

Humberside Police in NE Lincs provide a free home security check and upgrade by trained fitters. Please phone Jane Taylor on 01472 324988/324987 for appointment for this very useful service. The Police fitters are experienced in the methods used by burglars in this area and so will help you to avoid a nasty experience.

Under Age Drinking

The Humberside Police Licensing team in North East Lincolnshire is preparing to launch the Citizen Card scheme in a bid to stamp out sales of alcohol to those underage either at venues or at shops and off licences across the region.

Underage drinking is a nationwide problem and there are numerous schemes in place within the North East Lincs region to tackle local issues however sales of alcohol to those under 18 is a problem that officers are keen to stamp out.

The cards, which are PASS (Proof of Age Standards Scheme) accredited are a sure fire way of proving the age of the card carrier as they feature a unique PASS hologram which makes them a lot harder to copy or forge and they are accepted by businesses across the country while also ensuring that you no longer need to carry valuable items such as passports on a night out just to be allowed into a venue.

The cards are of benefit to retailers as well however as production of a Citizen Card at the point of sale will afford retailers and their staff increased confidence due to the validity of the card and up to date detail it provides on the card carrier.

Licensing officer Ken Stone said: "Young adults below the legal drinking age have been using either fake ID or passports and driving licences belonging to others to gain entry to licensed premises or buy alcohol for some time so this is not a new problem for North East Lincs or the rest of the country.

In fact, we regularly receive such items which have been confiscated by door staff over the weekend which has prompted us to look at alternative ways for young adults to prove their age in a reliable way which can't be borrowed by a friend or relative.

This pass card scheme will go a long way in tackling underage drinking as the pass cards carry an up to date photo of the card carrier and all of the applications are robustly scrutinized before a card is issued to the applicant.

We are also working closely with door staff and venues throughout the area in order to ensure that the Citizen Cards are widely recognized and accepted making in all licensed premises in North East Lincolnshire therefore making it very difficult for underage persons to gain entry or buy alcohol."

To get yourself a Citizen card free of charge simply collect a form from any of the outlets listed below and fill in as instructed:

Cards are available free of charge on a first come first served basis with interested parties able to collect application forms from the North East Lincs Council Municipal Offices in Town Hall Square, Customer Except, Kennedy Way, Immingham, the Civic Centre and Library in Cleethorpes, Customer info desk in Freshney Place, Grimsby, Grimsby Library and the Grimsby Institute reception and bar.

12 passports and 8 driving licenses were handed in to police following the festive period having been seized by door staff after attempts by those underage to gain entry to night time venues. Passports are returned to to the Passport Office which will result in the owner of the passport having to pay an £80 fee for its return.

Ice Barque manager, Mr Dawson, two people over 18yrs, door safety staff member, Mr Fulcher, Police licensing officer, Ken Stone and Citizen Card chief executive Andrew Chevis starting off the system.

Unlocked Doors and Windows

Crime analysts at Grimsby and Scunthorpe have just told safelinks that of the house burglaries reported so far this year about a third, yes 33%, have involved an insecurity.

This means thieves have simply walked in through an unlocked door or reached in through an insecure window, unhooked the catch and climbed in.

Thieves roam around the streets walking down drives and trying back doors.

If challenged they will have a little story to put you off guard so they can make a getaway.

Thieves take advantage of these insecurities and steal handbags, wallets or car ignition keys left on the kitchen table.

Please pass the warning about to lock doors and windows at all times even if you are in the house.

If you see anyone going down drives please call Police straight away on 0845 60 60 222 straight away.

Reducing Crime and Anti Social Behaviour in Your Area.

Safelinks wants to further reduce crime and anti-social behaviour in this area brought about by the public and police.

There is less crime and bad behaviour in areas where there is an active neighbourhood watch in place. The reason is that the police are only as effective as the quality of information given to the police by the public. In other words grouping together protects your home and outnumbers criminals.

Graham Reynolds is an experienced neighbourhood watch group development officer and is there to help you to set up a group to protect your street. You then gain the strength of The Humberside Association of Neighbourhood Watch Groups.

Setting up is not difficult and does not involve a great lot of time to function. As with all these things the success depends on people interested in making their area much safer. I think that person is you.

It's about grouping together and caring without interfering. Graham and Howard can help you get the balance right.

There is a clear difference between a general moan and groan about the state of things and reporting a suspicious incident or the activities of a criminal. The latter puts criminals in a position of disadvantage.

For years the best successes by the Police have been the public calling about a suspicious incident, the Police responding to the incident and arresting the criminal or stopping the incident.

The Police are getting better so we, the public, need to get better too.

If you are interested in helping to start a neighbourhood watch group or want to know if a group exists in your area please call safelinks via 'contact safelinks' and we will ask Graham to call.

Drug Raids in Grimsby Area

Police in the Grimsby, Cleethorpes and Immingham areas continue working to stop the dealing of drugs.

Regular information to the Police is needed and you can help to improve your area in this way. This can be done in confidence by phoning Police on 0845 60 60 222. What has worked very well is regular emails to safelinks on via "Contact safelinks." It helps if you leave an email address as we can ask specific questions posed by Police Intelligence Officers.

It may take time until you see something happening as the investigation will not be obvious so the time to call is now.

Police Helicopter Unit

Following messages about the Humberside Police Helicopter Unit safelinks went across to the base at the Humberside International Airport.

The unit moved to its purpose built premises in July 2005 from its previous location at Normandy Barracks, Leconfield.

The team consists of four pilots and eight air observers working shifts. Police and Civilian staff support the fliers.

The helicopter they operate is a MD902 Explorer powered by Pratt and Whitney Canada 207E engines

The important feature of this aircraft is that it has no tail rotor and this cuts down on noise. Incidentally when out on operations at night the pilot flies as high as possible without compromising operational efficiency in order to cut down on noise disturbance to residents.

When the helicopter is out of action for any reason there is an arrangement with the West and South Yorkshire Helicopter Units to provide service.

The unit is called upon to assist with pursuits of suspects in vehicles or on foot, to search large areas for missing or wanted persons. They also assist in the management of serious crime scences and serious road collisions. Another service is the monitoring public order situations. The team also make patrols as part of attending incidents. The helicopter is ready to go at a moments notice and it's position at the airport makes it quicker to reach incidents in our area.

Last month 77 operational flights took place in NE Lincolnshire attending 77 incidents involving 17hrs flying time and 67 operational flights took place attending 24 incidents involving 17hrs flying time in North Lincolnshire.

Kevin Limbert and his team were extremely helpful and keen that you know as much as possible about the unit. If you have any question not answered here please contact safelinks via messages. Specific operational information is not possible
